Where Is Fenghuang?

Fenghuang sits in the hills of western Hunan Province, in south central China. It belongs to the Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture. The nearest big city is Huaihua, about an hour away by road. In addition, Zhangjiajie and its famous sandstone pillars lie a few hours to the north. The name Fenghuang means phoenix. In fact, local legend says two phoenixes circled the area and decided to stay.

Why Visit Fenghuang?

First, the setting is lovely. The old town grew along both banks of the river, so almost every view includes water. Second, the culture is rich. The Miao and Tujia peoples have lived here for centuries, and their silver jewelry, embroidery and food are part of daily life. Also, the town feels different by day and night. Mornings are misty and calm. However, evenings bring red lanterns, music and crowds along the water.

Things to Do in Fenghuang

Walk the Tuojiang Riverbank

Start with a slow walk along the river. The stilt houses, called diaojiaolou, rest on tall wooden posts above the water. Then cross the stepping stones near the Hong Bridge. It is the easiest way to see both banks up close.

Take a Boat Ride

Next, hire a small wooden boat. A boatman will pole you past the houses, the water wheels and the old ramparts. The ride is short and peaceful. So, it is a good way to rest your legs after a morning of walking.

The town once guarded a frontier region. As a result, it still has sections of stone wall and a sturdy North Gate tower. Climb up for a view over the rooftops. Afterward, wander the narrow lanes that run away from the river.

Visit the Former Home of Shen Congwen

Shen Congwen, one of the great Chinese writers of the 20th century, was born here. His family home is now a small museum. Moreover, his novel Border Town helped make the region famous. His grave sits on a quiet hillside east of town.

See the Town at Night

After sunset, the riverfront lights up. Bars play music and lanterns glow on the water. Still, you can find quieter spots further along the bank.

One Historical Fact About Fenghuang

Fenghuang was a military town for much of its history. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, officials used it as a base to watch the Miao frontier. Therefore, many of its walls, gates and towers were built for defense rather than for beauty.
