Where Is Tozeur, Tunisia?

Tozeur lies in southwest Tunisia and serves as the capital of Tozeur Governorate. More specifically, it sits on a strip of land between two salt lakes, the huge Chott el Djerid to the southeast and the smaller Chott el Gharsa to the north. The Algerian border is only a short drive to the west.

By road, the town is more than 400 kilometres southwest of Tunis. However, it also has its own international airport, which makes it easier to reach than many travellers expect.

Tozeur lies in southwest Tunisia, between the salt lakes of Chott el Djerid and Chott el Gharsa.

Why Visit Tozeur, Tunisia?

First, Tozeur offers a true oasis experience. Hundreds of thousands of palm trees grow here, fed by springs and an old network of canals. As you walk beneath them, the air suddenly feels cooler and greener.

Second, the old town is unlike anywhere else in Tunisia. Its yellow brick walls carry raised geometric patterns that change with the light throughout the day.

Finally, Tozeur makes an excellent base. From here, you can visit mountain canyons, cross a shimmering salt lake and explore desert film sets, all within a short drive.

Exploring the Old Medina of Tozeur

The historic heart of Tozeur Tunisia is the Ouled El Hadef quarter. Above all, it is a place to wander slowly with your camera.

Ouled El Hadef and Its Brick Patterns

Here, narrow covered lanes twist between houses of sun baked brick. Local builders laid the bricks in raised patterns, forming diamonds, zigzags and star shapes. Some designs even resemble the motifs found in Berber rugs and jewellery.

Traditional Houses and Doorways

Many houses still have heavy wooden doors decorated with metal studs. Meanwhile, carved grilles cover the windows and keep the interiors cool. Look closely, and you will notice that no two facades are exactly the same.

A Story of Coexistence

Historically, both Muslim and Jewish families lived side by side in the medina. As a result, the quarter reflects a long history of shared life and trade in this desert town.

Inside the Tozeur Oasis

Just beyond the town, the palm groves stretch for kilometres. Farmers grow dates under the tall palms, and fruit trees and vegetables grow in the shade below them. This three level system makes the most of every drop of water.

Tozeur is especially famous for Deglet Nour dates, often called the “dates of light” because of their translucent colour. During the autumn harvest, you can buy them fresh at the local markets.

To see the oasis, you can walk, cycle or take a traditional horse drawn carriage along the shady lanes. In the late afternoon, the light through the palms is beautiful.

Day Trips Around Tozeur

Tozeur Tunisia is surrounded by some of the most striking landscapes in the country.

The Mountain Oases

To the northwest, the mountain oases of Chebika, Tamerza and Mides cling to rocky canyons. At Chebika, a small stream flows through a gorge lined with palms. Meanwhile, Tamerza has a waterfall, and Mides overlooks a deep canyon near the Algerian border.

Chebika

Chebika is the closest and easiest of the three to visit. A short trail leads from the old abandoned village to a spring and small waterfalls.

Tamerza and Mides

Further along the same road, Tamerza and Mides offer more dramatic scenery. Together, the three oases make a perfect full day trip by 4×4.

Chott el Djerid

Southeast of town, the road crosses Chott el Djerid, one of the largest salt lakes in the Sahara. For much of the year, it looks like a white, glittering desert. After rain, however, shallow pools reflect the sky in shades of pink and blue. At sunrise, you may even spot a mirage on the horizon.

Star Wars Filming Sites

Fans of Star Wars will love the area around Tozeur. For example, the Mos Espa film set stands in the desert a short drive northwest of the town. Nearby, the rock formation of Ong Jemel, or “the camel’s neck”, also appears in the films. Further south, the Lars homestead set sits alone on the salt flats of Chott el Djerid.

One Historical Fact About Tozeur, Tunisia

In the 13th century, the scholar Ibn Chabbat designed an irrigation system for the Tozeur oasis. His plan used open canals to divide spring water fairly among the farms. Remarkably, farmers used this system for centuries, and it helped the oasis flourish in one of the driest places in Tunisia.

How to Get to Tozeur, Tunisia

The quickest way to reach Tozeur is by air. Tozeur Nefta International Airport receives flights from Tunis and, in some seasons, from Europe.

Alternatively, you can travel by road from Tunis, Sfax or Gafsa. The drive takes most of a day, so many visitors break the journey along the way. A railway line also links Tozeur with Gafsa, Sfax and Tunis.

Once you arrive, taxis are cheap and easy to find. For the mountain oases and the salt lake, however, a 4×4 tour is the best choice.

Best Time to Visit Tozeur, Tunisia

The best time to visit Tozeur is from October to April, when days are warm and pleasant. In particular, November and December are a great choice, since the International Festival of Oases takes place then.

Summer, on the other hand, is extremely hot, with temperatures often above 45°C. Winter nights can also be surprisingly cold, so pack a warm layer.

Is Tozeur, Tunisia Worth Visiting?

Yes, without a doubt. Tozeur combines a historic medina, a lush oasis and some of the most dramatic desert scenery in North Africa. Moreover, it is calm and friendly, and it feels far from the busy coastal resorts. Two or three days here will give you a completely different view of Tunisia.
